Town Turns Out to Block Westboro Protest

November 08, 2010
UPI

A small Missouri town turned out to keep Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church from protesting a Soldier's funeral.
The funeral of Sgt. First Class C.J. Sadell, who died Oct. 24 from wounds in Afghanistan, was held Saturday in Weston, Mo.
"I'd say probably half the people in Weston are here," Marine veteran Eric Moser told WDAF-TV of Kansas City, Mo.
Sadell was in the Arif Kala region of Afghanistan when his unit was ambushed Oct. 5. He was 34 and leaves a wife and two sons.

"We got everybody here early so we could take up all the parking spots," said Rebecca Rooney, who organized the supporters. "We did that so Mr. Phelps wouldn't have a contingency that was really close."
The Westboro protesters didn't stay long once they saw the supporters.
"I'm glad they left, but I'm sad they came," Rooney said.
Half of the group lined up at the intersection while the others formed a human shield around the funeral home.
The Phelps group, from Topeka, Kan., protests troops' funerals around the country, saying their deaths are God's judgment on America for "condoning homosexuality."

They came to Iowa City a couple of years ago. I can't remember exactly why, but I do remember at least 1 or 2 of the group ended up in jail. I'm sure they were welcomed in there. hahahaha

Yeah, those jackasses give the rest of us Kansans a real black eye.

Trust me, the rest of the state can't stand them either. They are like the ACLU and hide behind technicalities of the Law.

Ok I dont agree with homosexuals etc....but its not my right to say what they can do and dont....

I dont want people telling me what I can and cannot do.... thats what being an American is....

I think there should be a law if you do not support the troops it should be treason.... just my .02

many american soliders died for their freedom and the b.s. that they are pulling....
they are the MOST UNGREATFUL people.....

Well, I am not so sure its an actual judgment issue, but I guess it could be applied as being judemental. The Bible adresses homosexuality in many places, just as it does, lust, greed, selfishness, pride, etc. None of them may be gay, but I garuntee you as a human being they struggle with many of the other things.

They are in a way just stateing what God says about these things albeit in a very arrogant and hateful manner. The problem is they are just picking out this ONE area of sin. And as a Christian you should hate sin, NOT the sinner. And these soldiers have nothing to do with what some people decide for themselves.
Westborogh Baptist Church might want to have a few sermons over Matthew 7:1-5

FWIW, I am COMPLETELY against homosexuality. I think its a complete distortion of how we were created and it pretty much makes me sick to my stomach. But, I am certainly not hateful or judgemental (I used to be though). That is one thing I have worked on. AGAIN, I want to reiterate, I CANNOT STAND what this Church does and stand for. I DO wish they would use better judgement and have some sense of respect for soldiers of this great Nation. Just as was mentioned they OWE them that much.

No, Matthew 7:3-5 says;

"Why then, do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the log in your own eye? How dare you say to your brother, Please let me take the speck out of your eye when you have a log in your own eye?
You hipocrite! First take the log out of your own eye and then you will be able to clearly see to take the speck out of your brothers eye."
