Ok bass doctor got one fer ya or anyone else who wants a stab at it.
On a lake I can just about gurrantee you that there is one place and lure that I can go to and throw and I can gurantee you 1 bass. Where on a river can you duplicate that.
Dang river fishing throws me a curve ALOT.I know I can take a jig on a lake and throw it on a drop off into deeper water and I can just about bet I is gonna stick one. Dang river fishin changes day to day and I have seen it change from hour to hour especially on my home river......the Quachita. With its lock and damns I can go in the morning........catch fish...............go back that eveinng and they are gone cause the dang locks where opened and the water moved differently.

Given a choice I will fish a river every time over a lake simply because the fish or so predictable... If there is current I fish points and li'l pockets and they don't have to be well defined - anything that offers protection from the current while waiting for lunch to go swimmin' by. I'm almost always chunkin' a jig with any water flow but spinner baits n' shallow swim baits cranked with a fast current work well also. But... if the bite slows with the absence of current - finess rig w/ 1/16 or 1/32 oz. weight and 4" finess worm - depending on water clairity. If you fish the river often enough and experiment you'll discover places you can always go and catch fish - no matter the conditions. I've found log jams in the middle of the river with c-rigs that have been loaded with fish but... ya' gotta spend hours locating those types of places. Mostly it's following the lead the river gives you.... fast current=fast bait... slow current=slow bait.
Edit ---> I realized I didn't really anwser your question. On rivers I've fished a lot I go to places similar to your lake spot. It usually involves deeper water on an outside bend and jig fished slow. There I almost always catch a fish.

You asked for just one place, most rivers like the ohio do not have points, coves,a few backwaters created by creeks thats about it so if I wanted to catch a fish on just one cast,
Id throw to the front of a bridge abutment, one of the ones near one side or the other,as spotted bass sit on them awaiting prey.
Wing dams, ice breakers ,mooring cells, parked barges, all man made they love to sit on as they provide cover and a current break, then repositioning them as to where they are at on them,if it grows stronger.
I want to hear the docs answer as well.

ALL rivers have points. Don't misunderstand what I said - "They don't have to be well definined." There's hundereds if not thousands of spots on any given river system where the bank may protrude out 6-12" creating not only a mini-point but and adjacent pocket as well. Broaden your definition n' you'll see the points I'm refering to.

Last time I looked the ohio had some curves no real points, other than at creek mouths.
And due to dredging lacks a lot of underwater features as well.
Between Chilicothie Ohio and Ravenwood W.VA,I dont recall much in the way of points.Mini points like two or three ft ones but nothing amounting to much.
Each to his or her own,I fish man made structures mostly in the Ohio river, laydown trees, points are few and far between. As the coe removes them when found.

Wellll... LM.... If you're going to insist on flyin' down the river at 64mph you'll miss seein' what I'm refering to! and as you stated ".... to each his own"
Hint: It's those that "...don't amount to much" that often get ov'a looked and hold quality bass. Fish use what they can find and if all they can find are "mini-points...guess what - they use'em!

Different river systems the tn river is chock full of them, the Ohio is quite lacking.
Ive won over 1000 dollars on the Ohio, not big bucks,$789 for one 4lb 8 oz smallie and not one dollar of it came off a mini point. All in a boat that wouldnt do 64 mph.
I agree points in rivers are great just dont know of any on the Ohio river worth fishing.
The Knawaha has a few,and yes productive ones.
Each river one has to fish whats available or best suited for the angler, for me thats man made structure on the ohio.

LM - what I was trying to do was give Jay some insight into river fishing so it wouldn't be such a buttkicker fer him. That man-made structure holds fish is such a given that I assume Jay is aware of that. I was pointing out the finer aspects of river fishing. Then you post "most rivers... like the Ohio..." don't have points". That's very misleading. And just because you haven't found success in fishing shoreline irregularties that by no means indicates they don't use that structure - they do. And when you find the spots that are holding fish - oft times they are really good fish.
Your comments remind me of the fisherman at the ramp that states "The're only biting red jigs!" Then someone ask him if he tried any other color. "Nope!" he replies "I threw red jigs all day long!" Clearly a case of "welll duhhhhh"!
