I need to select the electronics for my new boat, I've been a Lowrance fan but haven't used one of the new units yet, so...

Is anyone using the new Lowrance HDS units?

Likes?

I think its more than what you want or need,it has those cababilities on the web site, but
Like many things one has to buy the accessories,to get the total viewing as shown.
Kind of like buying a gps cabable of running navionics platnum, not preloaded.
If on the other hand its what you want just make sure you buy all thats necessary to run what you desire.
Read the fine print, order then wait till the snow melts as its in top demand and out of stock in many places.

If you are used to a non HDS unit, it definitely takes some getting used to, but with a reasonable effort it is a really amazing piece of electronics...I didn't like mine at first, but now I love it!

i just received an hds5 but without the high def information built in. so far, so good. i like the pages are accessed on this model over my old lms522. sonar picture seems a little better but that could just be my mind telling me it is so.

Frug,

The only issues I've ran into with the HDS series was water infiltration through the screen. Lowrance advised that mid to late summer 2009 they corrected the issue which was the sealant being used around the screen. When the units heated up the sealant softened and de-laminated allowing water through the screen face. Just make sure if you order a HDS unit it's a DOM of late 2009 as Lowrance made it a rolling change over and for some reason did not notify or document serial numbers or DOM as pre/post issue dated. So, inventory at places such as Bass Pro had to be sold, the issue claimed on warranty and an exchange unit or repairs made after the purchase.

thanks for the heads up, JEV, I've postponed acquireing one as I've got both an 26hd and a 25c for the new boat right now, so saving $$ til after I get that big 44.94 tax refund - NOT!

Those are good units Frug.

Also, with the money you make Pres. Nobamma is sending you another bill. Reid's grandkids need shoes..............

frug hds is the best in my opinion! more detail on maps and on sonar than humming[which was my fav]. old lowrance menu alittle tricky and time consuming not hds.. 600 dollars for side scan..... i,ll have too wait for that

Muddin it's been a while since you used Humminbird then. And SideImaging and DownImaging are not hardware add on or extra $$$.

I've got the
hds5 lowrance unit.
Everthing works great but when i get-up on plane it doesn't show the depth feature on screen (only dashes)......can anyone tell me why? Lowrance won't gimme' a strait answer. I have the trans mounted back of boat-do I need the thru hull???

It depends on the boat and location of the transducer in relation to the motor. if your going 25-30mph it should be fine. Any faster and you will need the through hull transducer. The reason is the amount of water Resistance on the transducer that causes vibration and thus a false reading.

The hds is a very nice unite.

gee thx...will be testing your theory this weekend. i'm definitely running 60mph plus/gps in the '95 Ranger with a XP175. i luv the unit-a plasma quality screen is hard to beat. already saving up for a 8" or 10" unit.
