I want to change the throttle and shift cable on my boat.
Are Teleflex TFXtreme cables worth the extra $$$ (about $20 premium over regular cable).
I have a Nitro 160TF with a 75 hp Force by Mercury with a Quicksilver 3000 control.
I'm not sure how to take apart the controller.
If anyone has any pointers before I dig in it would sure be appreciated.

Teleflex cable are deffinitly worth the extra money. Especially after you do it once. It's a PITA.
there are 3 screws holding the control on the side of the boat. about 4in long. They are nutted from behind. A bear to get to. There are several models of the 3000 so I'll give ya the common one dis assembly inst.
The handle comes off by removing the plastic button on the center of the control handle and removing the bolt underneath. The cover for most simply pops off.
Pull the throttle back (reverse) about 1/4 to 1/2 way. The key to getting the neutral button out is applying equal amounts of pulling pressure on opposite sides of the button. Two small flatblade screwdrivers across from each other should work fine. Once the button is out use an 18mm deepwell socket to remove the bolt holding the throttle arm on. Now the arm should come off rather easily.

the back plate has screws holding it on . comes right off. Careful with them the heads strip easily. Once you see the guts stop and look at the whole thing and see how it works. This will help putting it back together.
when you take that back plate off the control make a drawing or even better take a pic this way when things pop out (and they will) you'll know when and how they go back in. They will need to be adjusted at the motor end when you get there. Make sure at WOT the plates are horizontal on the carbs. and the shifter is in the center of it's travel in neutral.

From personal experience:

TeleFlex or Mercury Premium Cables are the best, well woth the money. I changed mine out when I made my new controls and couldn't believe how smooth they were. They're the best and well worth the extra $$$$$ :D

To change your control cables depends how the control box itself is mounted. If your control is attached to an aluminum plate rather than directly through the fiberglass, it's easy.........unscrew the plate, remove 3 screws from the back of the control box. You now have access to the 2 screws holding the cables in place. Remove the screws and pull the cables out of the control box. Now would be a great time to lube up the inside before it's sealed back up once the new cables are installed.

If your control is mounted through the fiberglass, follow Charlies instructions.............
