Oh yea!! Been a while since I've been, I never caught the big one but did catch some nice ones. This lake is off limits to tournaments.. The water is normally crystal clear, it has just about any kind of structure you would want to fish including an old barn that is still standing, from what I here this is where the hawgs have been caught..It takes about an hour and a half to get there from my house. It's just outside of Monticello, Ark

I remember Monticello Lake very well. My business customer who lives in Pine Bluff taken me down there back in 1998 or 1999. He was bragging about the big bass in the lake. The only thing that was big that I saw was those 10 thousand snakes that were the size of baseball bats and at least six feet long. Most had the features of having cotton around their mouths. We went back into the large middle cove that runs north where he said the monsters were living. I think he meant the snakes not the bass. Let's say.. he hasn't invited me back. Should he give out the invitation, I'll have a good excuse.

Hmmmmm.......The lake does harbor some very large snakes..aint gonna bs you bout that but it is one of the best lakes for gettin yo quipment tested. I fish there alot especially when da wether gets hot. Dang good nite fishn hole. Finally I got all the GPS coordinates to all the ponds in the lake and have met up wit a fella that used to ride horses where the lake is. I have nailed 5 fish over 7lbs so far and had 3 more that where shall I say ALOT bigger. I fish the cove alot that is north of the plantersville ramp and it is chock full of stumps branches and a couple of snakes.

Lake Monticello, what a nice sounding name for a lake and congrats of the big fish, but yr not saying what you used to get em on.
nor what all the particulars were (now were not asking for all the secrets but just some ideas to help others better fish).
what rod or reel, what line, what baits were working, temp of water, depth?
comon give it up......

Actually a very large 12 to 14 in worm looks just like a lil snake and the bass eatem.
Just dont pull up under a cottonwood or weeping willow as those same cottonmouths like to rest in the branches and do not like to be disturbed.
As like in dropping down into boat.
I dont like cottonmouths grew up in w.va with copperheads, and timber rattlers, the cottonmouth is one of the few that when you po them they will attack and even chase you.
The copperhead Ive even stepped across on a trail, being brought up to never ever step on a stick on the trail. They are all pit vipers and sense heat.
Best to leave alone and avoid the cottonmouth all together if possible.

I had a cotton mouth leap off the ground chasing me with mouth wide open. As I was running and looking back he was still coming for me, scared the s@#t out of me..But what pissed him off was I shot at him with a bb gun and must have grazed his head, went back to the house and grabed my 4-10 shotgun (I was 14 years old at the time) and found and finished him off :D:D...

Depends on the season as to what to fish. Right now plastics on the beds. Then the big and I do mean the bigger cranks come into play. When the heat comes on the 14" worms get the bigger bites.....as the weather starts to cool off the spinnerbait bite picks up and the cranks come back into play. Thats the normal list but we all know that there are bass that havent read the book. I use no less than 65lb Power Pro when fishng there. The stumps and root wads are like rock in that lake.......weirdest thing I ever saw.

I understand why those bass get to 8 lbs class, and why fishing with 12" worms are so effective. It's those "young" cottonmouths snakes the bass are accustom to eating.
My friend in Pine Bluff...Thurman Reagar was a daring soul. He loved dangerous outings. One time...back in early 1970's he asked me to go frog hunting. I love frog legs, and agreed to come down and take him up on the invitation. Thurman had this 10' or 12' flat bottom boat he hauled in bed of his pickup with a one cylinder old motor that one to turn around to go in reverse. We went to a small creek called Bayou Meta not too far from Pine Bluff. Before we put the boat in the river, Thurman wrapped both arms from the shoulder to hand with "gunny sacks", and worn a pair of leather gloves with another wool pair over the leather ones for protection from snake bites. At that time I was beginning to think this wasn't going to be a picnic for frog hunting. By the time he did all his, it was getting dark and with his tiny light taped to his hard hat, we put the boat in the water. He instructed me few times... "When I say go into reverse, turn the motor around and get her in reserve fast." Fear turned to fright as the snakes begin falling out of the over-hanging branches into the boat. Thurman would grab them and sling them out of the boat. Making this story short... we did get probably 50frogs. I considered that was my death wish, and I've never gone frog hunting since.
