A FISHY STORY or How I Met My Husband Fishing by Marianne Friederich

One day late in the spring of 1972 I decided to go fishing with my younger sister, Mimi, at a local lake just about 10 miles from home. We packed up a huge lunch basket, our rods, some bait, and headed out. I was 18 years old at the time and full of vim and vinegar. My sister was 10 and a little snot at times, but a good go-fer and helper when she wanted something, and she wanted to go fishing! I was also a very opinionated young lady and not given to much compromise with the opposite sex. Females had been going through a sort of revolution over the preceding few years, and I was no exception.
We arrived at the marina and rented a small boat. It wasn't motarized, but we didn't think we'd need one of the larger boats, and could just row at our leisure to different coves and fishing spots. We started out about 8:00 A.M., which was really good for me in those days, getting up that early. I'd just graduated from high school and was feeling very independent and proud of myself. I was also working at a local Dog & Suds Drive-In and making my own money, although $3.50 an hour didn't go too far, even in those days. But back to the FISH story -- Mimi and I had been fishing for about 3 hours, catching some crappie and bluegill, but nothing of any size. We were just catching them and putting them back, having a good old time. We were far away from where we'd put into the water, and weren't in sight of the marina at all. Mimi had to use the facilities, so I just rowed over to the bank, which was full of trees and foilage, and told her to be careful of poison ivy and critters, and she left the boat for the woods. I decided this would be a good time to eat our lunch, also, so I took out the sandwiches and we both ate and then set out to fish some more.
Suddenly Mimi jumped up and started yelling -- SCREAMING, in fact, that there was a snake in the boat! I looked down and there was the biggest, ugliest, water mocassin -- must have been 5 foot long (but looked at least 12 foot to me at the time). When she jumped up, the boat rocked, and tipped over, spilling us and all of the boat's contents into the water. I seem to notice that the snake leisurely swam off during this time -- but with me worrying about Mimi and the boat being capsized, everything seemed to be going in slow motion. She grabbed onto the side of the boat, and I grabbed the other side, and we looked at each other, and all I can remember is that she looked so funny with her hair plastered to her head and baggies of chips and sandwiches floating around her. I started laughing -- she had started crying but when she saw me laughing she stopped and her mouth fell open, staring at me. JUST about that time I heard the sound of a trolling motor and around the bend came this big, handsome hunk of a man (he must have been at least 22 years old). He was wearing a red flannel shirt, a fishing vest, and had a nice bass boat that gleamed in the sun as he headed towards us. "ARE YOU OKAY?" he hollared, and I gulped and was hardly able to talk. He said later he thought I was in dire distress by the look of me; the way my face was streaked with green moss that had woven itself into my hair, my mouth was hanging open, and my makeup (yes, I wore makeup fishing) had run down my face. He cut his engine and dived into the water, swimming first to Mimi and swimming her back to the boat, and then back to me, the CREATURE FROM THE LAGOON. By this time I had regained my voice, and I said "I'M FINE -- REALLY I AM. JUST HAD A SNAKE IN OUR BOAT AND MY LITTLE SISTER GOT UPSET AND TIPPED IT." We then swam over to his boat and he helped me up. I noticed he was trying not to grin once he was sure we were okay, and I didn't understand it at the time until I saw myself in the boat mirror. We introduced ourselves to each other, and he took us back to the marina to send someone out to get the boat. That was the BEGINNING -- we've now been married for 27 years, and we still like to go fishing together. And let me tell you this -- that isn't the last time we were in the water together. :^)
