Went fishing yesterday with my brother. We hit a lake that just reopened from renovations and restocking. It's a state lake by the name of Lamar Bruce. They restocked everything including Florida strain bass.
My brother had some of the diamondback worms that he's kept for years. I was using a black diamondback and was targeting the bream beds. The bass seemed to be lying in wait for bream. I've had tremendous strikes that have almost taken the rod out of my hand before. I threw the worm into a bream bed and was slowly dragging it across when I felt the bass biting. I set the hook as hard as I could, and when I did he exploded in the opposite direction. He hit it so hard that he ripped the rod completely out of my hands, and over the side of the boat it went. Luckily we were in shallow water so I grabbed another rod with a crankbait tied on and was able to hook my rod. Unfortunately the fish was gone. I'm 55 years old, and have been bass fishing since I was 10. I've never had that hard of a hit. I was aggravated at myself because I never even got to see him. Sounds stupid I know, but I had to share this experience with you folks. I'll be going back to lake quite often.
