After much research I dropped my lower unit today and changed the water pump (2006 Mercury 150 Optimax). Wanted to share my experience. This video helped a lot but did not show the connections for cable and speedo hose http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3HUWnLVzMI. I did not take mine out of gear and place either in forward or reverse.
1st make sure you mark your points
2nd there are two bolts that must be removed, second bolt is under plate.
3rd Photo Important to get the pitot hose (speedometer) and male/female cable hooked back up. Top view looking up at engine
4th Photo Male Gear and Pitot hose connection. Use 2 4 Grease on shafts
Ready to put lower unit back together make sure everything is connected and lined up. IF the lower unit does not fit back in smoothly have someone use a 15/16 socket and rotate the flywheel in order for the shaft to line up inside the upper unit. Patience is key, do not force the lower unit together. arty0011:
