I can vouch for the new Chevy trucks being quiet. I rented a Silverado 1500 and did a 150 mile road trip in it. It was insanely quiet. Luxury car quiet. Personally, I'm going to take a good long look at the new Chevy Colorado with the diesel when it comes out. GM has made giant strides forward in their quality in the last 10 years. The ignition switch scandal set them back, but people seem to be forgetting that Toyota just got the biggest fine in history for what it did. Engineers and car guys exist in all these companies. It's when the bean counters and accountants who answer to a board of investors take over that we get these horror stories. Moreover, the media loves to beat up on US car companies. Did you know that the Geo Prizm and the Toyota Corolla where both made by Toyota, on the same line, but the Geo had much worse reported reliability by owners? The only thing different on those cars where the badges. Want to know what the safest crash tested 2DR car was back in the 80s? It was a Pontiac Fiero! I owned an 87 GT model and it was a blast to drive, and was utterly reliable. Everyone loves the Mazda 3. I've owned two of them. And between those two, I've had 9 different AC units and 4 EGS sensors. It can happen to any car company. The 1999 Toyota Camry was notorious for having a weak roof. We had a tree fall on ours and it squashed it like a soda can. Same size tree hit other cars and they were fine. My 2007 Crown Vic has a gas tank that will basically explode in a high speed rear end collision. Ford NEVER fixed the issue which required moving the tank to a new location. Many officers died. No one seems to care. And yet my mothers Escape is a fantastic vehicle. My 2003 Expedition has holes in the roof from rust. MOST Expedition do due to a design flaw. Ford told owners to go pound sand. However, the engine and transmission are bullet proof! Our Dodge Chargers look amazing, but they are falling apart at record rates! Suspension failures. Cooling failures. Transmission failures. And yet I couldn't kill my Dodge Neon when I was a teen, and believe me I tried. My buddies Ram is 13 years old and all he does is recharge the AC once a year. My old Mitsu Eclipse went through 2 engines and 3 transmissions. Bone stock. My father drove a Renault Encore almost into the ground. Wouldn't die despite its horrible rep. His Le Car was garbage! Every single car company produces good and bad. From Toyota to Chevy, it doesn't matter. At some point, without regulation, a bean counter will weigh the price of a repair vs the risk to profits. For every Chevy Volt built by a silicon valley guy, you will have an Aztek built by a focus group. Just the way it is.
