How to Restore a Bass Boat Finish

Ready to Fish
Speed image by jura..

Many fishermen own bass boats. Fishing from a bass boat can be an exciting combination of speed on the water and catching large fish. Most bass boat owners take pride in the look of their boat. Over the years the finish on their boat can degrade and become dull. Restoring the finish is something that most any boat owner can accomplish with tools available from rental stores and supplies purchased at marinas or large home stores.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rubber gloves
  • Household detergent
  • Gallon bucket
  • Hose and water source
  • Sponge
  • Methyl Ethyl Ketone ( MEK )
  • Rags
  • Wax removing solvent
  • Random orbital buffer
  • Waxing bonnet
  • Rubbing compound
  • Boat wax
  • Wax removing bonnet
Step 1

Place the boat on a trailer and remove the boat from the water. Drive the trailer to a level location in the shade. There should be room to walk around the boat in all directions.

Step 2

Clean and degrease the boat as follows. Put on rubber gloves. Pour one cup of detergent into a gallon of water. Use a sponge to clean the boat with this solution. After the boat is dry, wipe the entire surface with a rag soaked in MEK.

Step 3

Saturate a rag with wax removing solvent. Sweep the rag in one direction to remove all of the wax from the surface. Avoid moving the rag back and forth, as this will reapply the wax.

Step 4

Place a waxing bonnet on a random orbital buffer. Place a small amount of rubbing compound on one area of the boat. Use the buffer at a low speed until the surface is glassy. Continue working on additional parts of the boat until the entire boat surface is glassy.

Step5
Place a new waxing bonnet on the random orbital buffer. Dab boat wax on a small surface of the boat. Lightly spread the wax with the included applicator, and then use the random orbital buffer with the waxing bonnet to apply the wax. Continue to apply the wax to the entire boat surface. Allow the wax to dry to a haze.

Step 6

Place a wax removing bonnet on the random orbital buffer. Move the random orbital buffer across the waxed surface in horizontal or vertical motions. Avoid circular motions. Remove the wax from the entire boat. The boat's finish is now restored.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply wax to a boat at least twice a year. Regular applications of wax will keep a boat finish shining for up to 15 years.

  • Always follow the directions on the container of MEK.
