Mercury MerCruiser’s 8.2-litre next generation big block marine engine is now available.
Drawing on the expertise of Mercury Racing specialists, Mercury MerCruiser has created a motor which produces more power and has better mid-range acceleration, lower emissions and superior fuel efficiency.
Naturally aspirated, the new big block features high-performance aluminium cylinder heads which help provide the extra punch.
The engine is available in two models – the 8.2 Mag which produces 380 hp and the 8.2 Mag HO which delivers 430 hp – with both sterndrive and inboard configurations.
The new engine, which replaces Mercury MerCruiser’s well-known 496, runs on standard unleaded fuel and is catalyst-equipped. Environmentally, the 8.2 has low level CO emissions, comparable to a diesel engine, and achieves remarkably low oil consumption.
Thanks to boat builder and dealer input, access to the engine’s service points and connections has been significantly improved to simplify installation and maintenance.
“Not only did the team achieve superior performance while adding a catalyst, they maintained fuel efficiency and improved serviceability without adding cost,” said Mercury MerCruiser’s project manager Derric Drake.

In addition, the new engine is completely compatible with a host of MerCruiser options, including Axius, SmartCraft, SeaCore and Guardian systems. Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) is available on the inboard models.
