Navigating New Water

I'd like to hear how others approach boating on an unfamiliar lake. I'm having difficulty finding navigational maps for lakes I'd like to fish, mostly because the lakes in the N.E. are small and there are no navigational maps. Outside of using the trolling motor to scout the lake, what are others doing? What lake map sources are out there? Thanks!
