trim problem. new bass boat owner. and new to this site

I bought 1990 nitro fs 175. It has 110 evinrude motor. My trim problem. ??? It makes noise wanting to trim down. But the latch for locking the motor won't release. Unless I can get it to trim up little bit more. To allow it to release. Problem is no noise or nothing when trying to trim it up. Now when I try trim down it just clicks. Unless I tap motor with hammer ??? What to do. Plzzzz help. Don't want pay fortune at marina unless have to
