WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 4.7 FEET, 72 DEGREES, CLEAR BY CHRIS BELL

Bass fishing has been good. With the cooler temperatures shad are traveling along the main and reach midway into pockets depending on where you are in the lake. On the southern end of the lake bait has been further back into deeper creeks. Our best fishing has come from points and main lake lay downs and brush piles in two to eight feet of water. The best producing lay downs have been located near some sort of rock preferably chunk. The three best baits are a spinnerbait, shaky head, and Pop-R. A Pop-R in shad pattern fished slowly around main lake wood and points is producing early in the morning and on windier days. Use a small Pop-R in order to match the bait that fish are feeding on. With wind or current the spinnerbait bite will produce but you will need to cover a lot of water. Use a 3/8 ounce spinnerbait with double willow nickel blades and white skirt. On some of our post frontal days that have not provided wind use a 1/8 ounce shaky head and a green pumpkin Z-Man floating worm. With the clearer water use eight pound fluorocarbon line on your shaky head. Fish will be tight to cover on these calm days so be prepared to slow down.

Hybrid and striper fishing is good. There has been little change this week for line sides. Fish are following bait along main river and into creeks. The best creeks are Wehadkee, Whitewater, and Yellow Jacket. Each week of cooler temperatures fish have pushed further up the river. I look for fish to begin feeding late in the evenings on top water near schools of bait working their way down the river channel. To catch these fish use a popping cork and fly. Another great way to catch these fish is to remove the rear hook of a Storm Chug Bug and attach a leader line of about two feet to a popping fly. We have caught many doubles with this rig. The best areas are just south of the 219 bridge for top water action. During the day because bait is spread out so are the fish. Troll Rapala shad raps, Strike King series five, and Rat L Traps in shad patterns. Some fish are schooling late in the evenings on shad. Use ½ ounce Mepp’s Rooster Tails in white with silver blade with a medium retrieve.

Crappie fishing has been good. Crappie have are being caught in the mouths of creeks and pockets relating to small shad. With the cooler temperatures fish have pulled further back into creeks almost midway. Troll live bait and jigs in twelve to eighteen feet of water. With the clearer water use a white with pink tail combination. The best creeks have been Half Moon Creek, Whitewater creek and Bird creek.
