11 injured in Red Wing Minnesota boat accident released

Emergency crews pulled 13 people out of the Mississippi River in Red Wing following a boat accident Sunday evening.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office said 13 people were riding on a 45-foot Donzi-brand performance boat.

Authorities said the boat was traveling approximately 50 miles per hour when the driver attempted to make a sharp turn. The boat hit a wake and everyone on board was thrown into the river. The boat did not flip over.

It happened around 7 p.m. near Lock and Dam 3, not far from Treasure Island Casino.

Eleven people were taken to hospitals in Red Wing, Ellsworth and Hastings with what officials described as moderate injuries.

Kris Johnson with the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office said. "When you have 13 people in a boat and they're all one moment in the boat and the next moment out of the boat and in the water, that's almost certain disaster. But, for whatever reason we dodged a bullet this time."

Two of the 11 people who fell in the water were children, ages 5 and 10. The children were wearing life jackets, but none of the adults were.

Authorities are still investigating, but they do not believe alcohol was a factor.
