Army Corps of Engineers Closes 21 Boat Ramps on Lake Lanier
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has suddenly announced the closure of 21 boat ramps on one of the busiest lakes in the nation, Lake Sidney Lanier. Right before the beginning of the 2025 summer season and Memorial Day Weekend. Citing issues with limited staffing, these parks, campgrounds, beaches, and boat ramps are closed until further notice. The USACE states that the current staffing levels are forcing them to prioritize essential public health and safety, such as dam operations and emergency response readiness, over operating all of their recreational areas. They state this decision comes after careful consideration for the safety and security of all visitors of Lake Lanier, that essential services such as park supervision, maintenance, and safety monitoring could not be done at all locations. As of now, there is no word on when these parks will be reopened, but USACE states that they will continue to assess and reassess the closures as the summer progresses.
Lake Lanier Parks that have been Closed:
Additionally, beyond Lake Lanier, several other parks are closed throughout the Southeast.
Allatoona Lake – Georgia
Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint – Florida
Black Warrior & Tombigbee Lakes – Alabama
Okatibbee Lake – Mississippi
Walter F. George – Alabama
Lake George W. Andrews – Georgia
