Part 2
How many of you carry the right # and type of pfd's on boat?
Pfd's are intended to keep you afloat. You must have one for every person on boat. If you are stopped by coast guard or marine patrol and you don't have them , you are sent back to dock are probably get a citation, they won't forgive you on this one. Many states required kids under 6 to wear them while on board, In many states the age is 12.
Pfd's are classified into 5 types:

type1 is the top quality offshore jacket. lots of buoyancy and lifting force of 22lbs or more by law. Its fitted in a jacket that stays in place even in rough seas. This is the type that will turn an unconcious person face up. This is a most for high performance boats and big water kayakers.

type2 it's the horse colar or near shore life jacket, with a 15.5lbs of buoyancy. it might be hard to keep it on on rough water and it won't turn an unconcious person face up. It's very unexpensive, and everyone is probably familiar with them (those brite orange life vests).

type3 currently the most popular type of vest, because is the most confortable to wear. it looks just like a jacket only it has buoyancy, and they usually have lots of pockets for tackle and acessories. this type of vest has a buoyancy of 15.5 pounds as well. they provide good thermal insulation in cold weather and are easy to store cause they fold flat. One desadvantage of this jacket is that they float low and you may have a hard time breathing in rough water. they also do not turn an unconcious person face up.

type4 is not a jacket at all, but either a throwable cushion with straps or a foam life ring. at least one is required on all boats bigger than 16'. the idea is to throw this to someone who fell overboard so they hold on to it untill you can bring boat around to person. they ain't intended to do much more than that. If you alone on your boat you still need to have it, even knowing no one would throw it to you. It's the law

type5 are survival a jacket at all, but either a throwable cushion with suits or other special equipment. Survival suits are the best of all life preservers, but they're so heavy and hot that they only worn in rain or in cold-climate boating. You can survive for hours in cold water or for days in moderate temperatures in this suit. Oh yeah, they also very expensive costing several hundred dollars each.

Surprisingly not many people wear pfd's, the law states that you got a have them but not wear them. People do not wear them because for the most they bulcky. Other then coast guard and marine patrol, pretty much only boat races and bass fishing tournaments wears them , and this because it's part of the rules or you get disqualified.
New additions to improve type 5 are inflatable jackets , belts, and suspenders. These are likely to take over the market once prices come down, because the're the only life jacket that people will actually wear in most weather. They are completely unobtructive and you don't even know they there untill you need them. not all are approved by coast guard so you got a look to the tag. The co2 cartrige could get loose,in which case you have a tube you can use to blow up the inflatables if that is the case. they can cost from $70 to $250.
