I had never gotten around to fishing a swim jig until this morning. It was just not a lure that i had ever tried. In the box with my BBM decal BB put a couple made by Brovarney Baits. I thought it was time i gave swimming a jig a try and I can say now that Im for sure a fan. I had a vague idea of it being like fishing a spinnerbait without a blade and thats pretty much what it is. I did watch a couple of quick vids on youtube from KVD and Ike just to see if there was any trick that i should try and they pretty much said the same thing. I paired one in the blue olive color with a strike king river rat black with blue fleck. In and hour and a half of fishing i had three in the boat and had missed twice as many due to poor hooksets on my part. I also did some tinkering with my rod and reel set up and think I will be better prepared next time i go. I usually fish spinnerbaits on a 5.1:1 gear ratio so I can better keep the bait down low (never been a fan of burning a spinnerbait) but with the swim jig this was a little slow. when I would pop the rod is usually when bites would occur but with the low retrieve speed i had trouble getting enough slack out before the fish would drop it for a good hook set. I was also using mono since the reel is one that was a recent garage sale purchase that was getting its first on the water test. Im sticking with a medium action rod like i would for a spinnerbait but I paired it with a 6.3:1 reel with 14lb florocarbon. Anyway the Brovarney company makes some fine jigs and I now have a whole new technique at my disposal.
