HEAT & COLD EFFECTS

HEAT
Heatstroke (sunstroke) - Symptons include red, hot and dry skin, strong and rapid pulse and very high body temperature.
Treatment consists of lowering the body temperature by immersion in cold water, or sponging with a cold, wet towel or rubbing alcohol until the temperature drops to less than 102 degres F.

Heat exhaustion - Symptons include pale, cool and clammy skin, dizziness, nausea and sometimes cramps.
treatment consists of laying the victim down with feet elevated and giving salted water (1 tea spoon per quart) at the rate of 8 ounces every 15 minutes for one hour, and gentle massage of the cramped muscles.

COLD
Frostbite Symptons include glossy, white skin that is hard on the surface but soft underneath. In extreme cases large blisters may appear.
Treatment consists of rapid warming in running or circulating warm water (102-105 degres F) Do not massage frozen area. Discontinue warming as soon as color returns. If frozen area is a limb or member, exercise it gently.
Hypothermia Symptons include shivering, muscular weakness and numbness and low body temperature. In extremes cases, the victim becomes unconcious.
treatment consists of warming the entire body quickly. Remove clothing and immerse the victim fully in water at 102-105 degres F. If the victim is concious , give him hot liquids, but not alcohol. discontinue treatment as soon as body temperature returns to normal.
