I just acquired a small 14' aluminum v-hull boat. I got it for free which is why I now own it, and figure I might as well put a small motor on it, especially if I decide to sell it. A guy I know has a 1972 Merc 9.8hp he wants me to buy for this boat. This motor appears to be in amazing condition for the year, clean..clean...clean...not even a dent, ding or scratch on the outside. The current owner owns a resort and said it was a rental on one of the lakes here for about 5 years, then it was put into storage for the past 30 yrs or so when he switched to larger boats....He said he started it 1 time 3 yrs ago since, when he moved it from one storage garage to another, and it fired right up. There are no visible signs of dry rot, wiring damage, etc. He is the original owner and someone I trust as it pertains to the motor not being abused (to his knowledge) as I've known him 20+yrs, and he wants $275 for the motor. I'm a cheap ass and don't want to shell out $275 and have to double my money in maintenance right away. I've no problem with oil, new water pump, etc...but wondering if anyone thinks this would be worth it, or should I try and talk him down??? I don't know much about these smaller outboards and see prices all over the place on craigslist. ....any help much appreciated as always!
