I know this is not about bass. But winter time walleye fishing on the Mississippi below the lock and dams is big. It is not unusual to see 30-40 boats or more below the rollers and locks when it is below zero.

Fishing ban lifted on Iowa's side of Mississippi dams

Anglers on the Iowa side of the Mississippi River will have reason to celebrate this winter.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has announced the lifting of a fishing ban below Lock & Dam Nos. 11-13 from Dec. 1 to March 15.

The restrictions have been in place for seven years, and were introduced to reduce the mortality rate of sauger. The species is a relative of the walleye, and congregates in the dam tailwaters during the winter.

The DNR cited a lack of improvement in the fishery, and considered feedback from anglers, in making the decision.

A similar ban still is in place in Illinois, but the state plans to amend it next season. The 20- to 27-inch release size for walleyes remains in effect from Dubuque to the Missouri border
