Just curious! when following a boat, where you like to be in relation to that boat?

I seen it all, people follow directelly behind boat ahead, others just to the side, others all over the place. I prefere to follow off to one side just before its wake is about to hit me, and eventually I go over wave and follow a little just off. Don't know if true, but I beleive that right behind it affects speed because of the boil the other boat leaves. Also to try to keep up with faster boat I try to run as much in a straight line as possible, instead of making turn in middle of channel I keep to the side I'm about to make turn and try to cut turn withing safety of course. (run close to side of channel I intend to turn)
