Keith Poche gets Third Major League Fishing Win on the James River

Pro angler Keith Poche claimed his third Major League Fishing victory and first at the Invitationals Level on the James River in Richmond, Virginia, this month. A shallow water aficionado, Keith Poche, started off Day One strong with a 23-pound, 15-ounce limit, which had two 6-pound-plus largemouth bass to really round it out. Poche spent the next two days of the tournament leaning into what he knows by fishing the backwaters. Fishing in shallower, hard-to-access creeks off the main river, this method produced 14 out of his 15 bass for the tournament. Fishing from a small aluminum boat, Poche was able to get into areas that very few of the other competitors could reach. Utilizing the tides, he found two key areas he knew only his small boat could reach: a small deep spot in the creek with steep banks where the fish schooled until the tide switched, and the mouth of the pond where fish would stack up and produce bites every day of the tournament.

For fishing those shallow backwaters, he kept his game plan simple, relying on three key baits. A 5/16-ounce shaky head paired with a Berkley PowerBait MaxScent General in green pumpkin seed, which landed most of his fish, and a crankbait or bladed jig for covering water as search baits. For his primary shaky head set-up, Poche used a 7’1” Heavy Fenwick World Class Casting Rod paired with an Abu Garcia Zenon MG-X Casting Reel, which was spooled up with 15-pound Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon.

“I knew this was going to be a tough event to win, but going in I felt like I had a real shot,” said Poche. “After Day One, I was confident—but as the fishing got tougher each day, the doubt started to creep in. I kept grinding, and luckily, I was able to hold on and edge out the win against a strong field. All day, it felt like I was one bite short, so it feels really good to close it out and get the job done.”

While the First Day was a great start for Poche, days two and three proved to be more challenging, as he was starting to fish out these smaller bodies of water off the main river. His Day Two limit came in at 16 pounds, 2 ounces, just enough to maintain his lead with his big Day One limit. Day Three netted him 12 pounds, 15 ounces, a far cry from his first day limit, but just enough to keep a 4-ounce lead and earn him the title and an $80,000 winner’s check.
