Montana Paddlefish Season – Changes and Openings
There are several changes to paddlefish regulations for the 2025 season that Montana anglers must be aware of before buying tags and hitting the water. First off, hooks must now be barbless or have pinched-down barbs, and you are only allowed one treble hook per line for snagging rigs. Second, forward-facing sonar when paddlefishing is now banned. However, side-imaging sonar, down-imaging sonar, and 2D sonar are still allowed. Additionally, the tag system has been changed this year, the yellow tag(lower Yellowstone River), NEW green tag (Missouri River downstream of Ft. Peck Dam), blue archery tag (now E-tag only), or white tag (no changes for 2025).

Talking of Yellow and Green tags, the season for yellow and green tags is opening up this month on Thursday, May 15th. The first day, the 15th, will be a catch-and-release only day for the yellow tag area on the lower Yellowstone River. The following day, Friday, May 16th, will be the first harvest day for the yellow tags. For green tags, the season will open for harvest on May 15th, for the Missouri River downstream of Fort Peck Dam. While paddlefish snagging is allowed here seven days a week as long as anglers are in possession of an unused green tag, catch and release is not allowed. The total harvest target of the yellow and green tag areas is 1,000 fish, with the season lasting from May 15 to June 15, or possibly closing earlier depending on the harvest rates of paddlefish. Reporting of harvested fish is mandatory, and must be done before transporting the fish or by 9 pm on the day of harvest through the phone hotline of the MyFWP app.
