New Michigan Trout Fishing Regulations for 4 Upper Peninsula Lakes

Four trout lakes in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have had their trout regulations changed recently by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission. After a recent vote, three of the lakes were reclassified to allow for more and smaller trout to be kept each day. For the last of the four lakes, it has been reclassified to allow for year-round trout fishing and the use of any tackle and baits. Additionally, four lakes have been removed as trout lakes and have had their Michigan trout fishing regulations removed. Instead, these lakes will now have management focused on other warmwater species that better suit the conditions of the lakes. These changes were put in place to expand fishing opportunities for anglers and to have the regulations better reflect the fish populations in these lakes.

For the trout lakes, Moon Lake (Luce County), South Kidney Lake (Marquette County), and Strawberry Lake (Marquette County) have all been changed from the Type D designation to the Type A designation. This allows anglers to keep up to five trout a day with a minimum size limit of 10 inches. These changes were brought on by surveys showing that the trout were not reaching the 15-inch minimum size limit at the lakes.

High Banks Lake (Chippewa County) has been changed from a Type A designation to a Type B designation. This change extends the season to the entire year and allows anglers to use all tackle and bait. Expanding the fishing opportunities for anglers to use live bait to target panfish and allow ice fishing.

The four lakes that have been removed from the trout lake list are Brians Pond (Alger County), Section 13 Lake (Marquette County), Cedar Lake (Marquette County), and Sawaski Pond (Alger County). These lakes have had all their trout fishing regulations removed, and now general fishing regulations apply.
