New Species of Bass Described – Bartram’s Bass

A new species of black bass has been described after decades of research and collaboration among scientists across the Southeast. While long known about by anglers and biologists as a species of bass unique to the Savannah River system, the newly described Bartram’s Bass (Micropterus pucpuggy). While originally referred to as the Redeye Bass (Micropterus coosae), the Bartram’s Bass had its formal description published recently in the scientific journal Zootaxa, after years of study. This was all supported by a Competitive State Wildlife Grant, funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, awarded to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR), Clemson University, and the University of Georgia. The grant helped advance the research on the Bartram’s Bass genetics, habitat, and conservation needs. The species is described by lead author Byron Freeman and coauthors, who named it Bartram’s Bass with the scientific name Micropterus pucpuggy.

“This recognition is a major milestone in understanding and protecting South Carolina’s native fish diversity,” said SCDNR Director, Dr. Tom Mullikin. “It highlights the importance of conserving the Savannah River system and the unique species that depend on it.”

The Batram’s Bass is a smaller species of bass with most fish under 14 inches in length, but still a capable fighter. Found often in swift, rocky rivers of the Savannah River drainage of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This new bass was named in honor of 1770s-era naturalist William Bartram, who explored the region where the bass lives. As of now, research is still ongoing into the Bartram’s Bass to better understand the conservation needs of this endemic species, so that we can properly protect this species for years to come.
