New State Record: Angler Catches Colorado’s Biggest Bluegill Ever While Fly Fishing for Pike

One of the coolest parts about fishing is you never truly know what you might catch on any given day. Sure, by carefully selecting your tackle you can certainly target a specific species, but you might still get a handful of those unexpected bites here and there. Well, while fly fishing for pike in Colorado last week, angler Gregory Wallace faced this very scenario – And ended up reeling in Colorado’s biggest bluegill EVER!

“Congratulations Gregory Wallace for catching the new Colorado state record Bluegill out of Totten Reservoir! The fish weighed in at 2 lbs 9.5 oz and had an overall length of 12.75″. The previous state record was caught in 2014 at Comanche Power Plant, weighed 2 lbs 5 oz, and was 11.5″.”

This big bream topped the old record by 4 ounces, and a full two inches in length!

Although this is an impressive bluegill, it’s still two pounds shy of the world record, which weighed in at 4 pounds, 12 ounces – what a hog! – after being caught back in 1950, according to the International Game Fish Association.

Sadly, no photos of that giant slab are floating around anywhere.

Congrats on your catch, Greg! That pancake-sized bluegill will make a nice addition to your trophy room.
