Remember when those NFL players were lost at sea? The outcome was 3 dead, and one surviver. Well, that could all be avoided had they planned their trip a little better. Other then the normal things like checking the weather, making sure the boat had all safe equipment on board, they could and should have had on board an "EPIRB", even better a personal epirb on each
Those guys made millions of dollars and still they got into a 21' boat and went 10+ miles offshore, basically asking for trouble. If they had this personal-epirb they all would have been safe within a couple hours of their distress signal. These personal units clip onto your life vest so even if you got separated from your boat (you should avoid that) chances are you would be found.
Prices on this units used to be around a thousand but now they can purchase for $600.
Here's the specs for a particular model:
ACR electronics microfix 406 uses 406MHz to send signals with gps location marks your position within 110 yards and runs 40 hours on two lithium batteries. 5 years replacement life weights 10oz.
I have friends who do a lot of salt water fishing for tuna, they go 17 to 25 miles out and they didn't know about this. They knew about the ones you install on boats but not the personal ones.
If its gonna save my life $600 is a small price to pay.
!!!!!BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!!!!!!
