BASS LAKES

Abiquiu Lake- Fishing is very slow. The Army Corps of Engineers have switched over to winter staffing and all but a few primitive sites are closed for the season. There was very little pressure and fishing is reported as very slow.

Morgan Lake – Bass fishing is good and is getting better with the cooling temperatures. Morgan Lake is a popular winter fishery and starting to get crowded. 5 - 6 inch Strike King Plastics and Finesse worms in dark colors with bright colored bellies are reported catching the fish.

Cochiti Lake – Very little pressure. Water temp's are in the low 50's. A few smallmouth bass were taken on crank baits along with a few pike. One pike measured at 27 inches. Some catfish were also landed using minnows.

Conchas Lake – Fishing is reported as slow with very little pressure. No report

Santa Rosa Lake – No report this week. Our club had our last tournament there and the report was very slow, flipping the cedar trees seemed to be the only bite.

Ute Lake – Water temperature is around 54 degrees, main lake clear, river arms stained. Fishing overall has started to pick up a bit. Walleye are fair fishing at 42 - 46 feet with slabs and spinners. Night crawlers in 20-30 feet of water has also produced some fish.White-bass are good fishing at 32 - 38 feet with slabs and spinner baits. smallmouth and largemouth bass are fishing slow. Catfish are good to excellent using stink baits in 4-15 feet of water.

Caballo Lake – Fishing is generally slow with light pressure. Water level are low and will remain so until spring. Anglers having success are fishing the deeper holes. Catfish are good using chicken liver, worms or shrimp. Walleye are reported as fair using night crawlers on the bottom. No report on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake – Fishing pressure has been light with very little pressure. White bass are slow with shiners or white jigging spoons. Catfish are slow with liver, minnows or shrimp. No reports on other species.

Trout waters, rivers and salmon snagging

Animas River - The flow is 328 cfs. Fishing is reported as slow with little pressure

Chama River - Upper section flow is 32 cfs, no report on the fishing there. Below El Vado Dam, the flow is 144 cfs and the water is off color. Fishing is good for browns averaging 14 -18 inches. One brown over 20 inches was landed on a Rapala. Anglers are having success using black and gold Panther Martins or night crawlers. 11-14 inch rainbows are also reported as good using Power Bait, night crawlers or salmon eggs. Wooly buggers and bead headed nymphs are reported working for both species.

San Juan River - Upper section-Catch and Release flow is 481 cfs and visibility is 2 and 1/2 feet. Fishing is good for rainbows and browns, reports remain the same as last week. From Texas Hole up to the Cable, fishing is very good in the mornings on #24-26 dark colored midge pupa and larva, Some fish are eating cream colored ones also. Afternoons below Texas Hole have been best gray or olive baetis emergers like a #22-24 foam wing, RS2, or Johnny flash. The baetis are active from 11:00 am to about 5:00 pm. It's back to brown or black midge pupa/larva after 6:00

Heron Lake– Salmon snagging season opened this past weekend and will remain open thru Dec 31. Snagging along the shore from Piedra Cove to the east side of the dam was reported as on fire. Most anglers got their limits. Shore fishing for trout is reported as good to excellent with roe collected from salmon caught at El Vado Lake. Spinners, worms and Power Bait are also working.

Navajo Lake – Salmon snagging still reported as good but more reports of fish starting to soften. Success is being reported around marina and at corner of the dam. Kokanee snagging season started as of Oct. 1 and will run till Dec. 31. A few Catfish have been landed around snagging areas using the roe from the salmon
