Port Aransas Officially Named Fishing Capital of Texas
The coastal city of Port Aransas has received the formal acknowledgment it has long sought, with Governor Greg Abbott signing legislation in May that officially designates the Mustang Island community as the fishing capital of Texas.
The new title comes through Texas House Concurrent Resolution 117, which grants Port Aransas the official designation for the next decade. For a city that has informally claimed this status for years, the state recognition represents validation of what residents and visiting anglers have known all along.
“We’ve kind of been calling ourselves that on our own for many years, but decided to go to the state, and the governor, and our legislators and ask for the official designation,” said Brett Stawar, President and CEO of the Port Aransas Tourism Bureau and Chamber of Commerce.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from the local fishing community, where many believe the recognition was overdue. Local record-breaking fisherman Dee Wallace expressed his satisfaction with the formal acknowledgment, noting that in his view, Port Aransas has always held this distinction, not just in Texas, but potentially across the entire Gulf of Mexico region.
Port Aransas celebrated the milestone with a special ceremony Wednesday evening aboard the Scat Cat vessel near the historic Lydia Ann Lighthouse. The event brought together state and local officials, residents, and dedicated fishing enthusiasts to mark what many consider a significant moment in the city’s history.
Mayor Wendy Moore emphasized the importance of receiving statewide recognition for what the community has always known to be true. The official designation acknowledges Port Aransas as a premier destination for anglers seeking diverse fishing opportunities along the Texas coast.
The city’s fishing reputation is built on its unique geographic advantages. Located on Mustang Island and surrounded by Corpus Christi Bay and the Lydia Ann Ship Channel, Port Aransas offers anglers access to multiple fishing environments. Whether visitors prefer inshore fishing in the protected bay waters or offshore adventures in the Gulf of America, the area provides year-round opportunities for various species.

Local fishing guide Randy Laurrell described the designation as a significant honor for the community, reflecting the pride that longtime residents take in their fishing heritage. The recognition extends beyond simple tourism marketing, representing an acknowledgment of the deep cultural connection between the community and its marine resources.
For families and visitors to Port Aransas, fishing represents more than a recreational activity. It serves as a cornerstone of the local economy and a tradition that connects generations of residents to their coastal environment. The official state recognition helps cement this identity while potentially attracting new visitors to experience what locals have celebrated for decades.
The designation positions Port Aransas to continue building on its reputation as a world-class fishing destination while maintaining the authentic character that has made it beloved among serious anglers and casual fishing enthusiasts alike.
