Stockton Lake Results
March 7, 2009

The Friday night meeting was held at the Cedar Oaks Lodge. Hosts Ben and Jerri Cooper are to be commended for the fine job they are doing on renovating the place. Our speaker was Marty Thompson, a local Walleye guide. Marty also has a radio show covering the Stockton Lake area. The meeting was attended by 18 individuals, including Ted Beck, outdoor writer. All participants enjoyed Pizza for dinner, an inspirational message by Marty, plenty of draw prizes, raffle prizes, and fine fellowship.

The teams took off under gray skies and temperatures in the high 50’s from Hawkers Point. Although the wind got brutal for part of the day, gusting over 30 miles per hour, a couple of teams brought pretty good sacks of fish to the scales. It was a close race for the first place money between the teams of Kevin and Bryan Jackson and Barry Goen and Arthur Brown. The Jacksons prevailed with 5 fish weighing 17.55 pounds. They also had second big Bass with a 3.99 pounder. They reported one of the best tournament days they’ve ever had, with a limit before 7:30 Am. Not bad considering they made a 10 minute run, after taking off at 7:00 Am! Altogether they caught 31 keepers – making for a pretty good day. Their fish were caught shallow in the back of feeder creeks, using 15 pound test line and fishing in water up to 56 degrees. The fish hit everything they threw at them – spinnerbaits, rogues, lipless crankbaits, and sexy shad crankbaits. For their efforts they took home $520.00

Goen and Brown made a good run for the top spot in their debut with Fishers of Men. Their 5 fish weighed 16.44 pounds, anchored by the big Bass of the day, a 4.64 pounder. Their fish were caught on jerkbaits in about 13 feet of clear, 41 degree water. They fished staging points using 8 pound test fluorocarbon line. This team enjoys the support of Mertens tackle in Jefferson City. They split $60.00.

Not to be outdone, the team of Gary and Garon Smith won the “junk fish” pot. They managed to land a .51 pound shad that slammed into a lipless crankbait in Mutton Creek. Don’t laugh – that fish was worth $40.00 to them, which makes it about the most expensive fish you can get – worth about $80.00 a pound by my calculations.

Again, thanks to our hosts at Cedar Oaks. Please give them a call at 417-276-3193 if you are in the area, particularly anyone launching at Hawker point, just down the road. Thanks to Marty Thompson, of Thompsons guide service, for another passionate message. Give him a call at 417-276-1791 if you want to fish for Walleyes on Stockton. A special thanks to Marty’s wife Lisa. She has become our official “Stockton Lake Coordinator” and does a fine job. .
