The MeatEater Glossary Helps You Perfect Your Outdoors Lingo

Spend an hour or two in the woods with somebody like Steven Rinella, and you’ll quickly come to realize there’s a whole glossary of ‘outdoors lingo’ you need to better familiarize yourself with. Fortunately, the MeatEater team is here to help out and put together a series of videos on YouTube to help folks perfect their outdoors lingo. So, dust off your old notebooks, break out the flashcards and let’s get started!

You may not have heard some of these phrases before, and that’s okay! It’s never too late to brush up, or expand on your outdoors lingo. Other phrases, such as “bucket,” you’ve certainly heard used before, but it takes on an entirely new meaning when somebody who’s fly fishing blurts it out.

We’ll get back to that one in a second, but let’s take a look at a ‘lesser-known’ phrase first:

Crepuscular-

Crepuscular /krəˈpəskyələr/

adjective

An animal that is most active at dawn or dusk. For whitetail hunters, this is the time of day when you’ve got to be in the woods. It’s that half-light period that gives you the best chance to see more deer.

Alright, now that you’re warmed up, we’ll throw a curveball into the mix..

Like we said, ‘bucket’ is probably a word you’ve heard at least a thousand times before in your life. But if you ever find yourself standing in the middle of a river, holding onto a fly rod with some old-timer shouting to “drift your line into the bucket between you a shore,” you might be confused.

Here’s how ‘bucket’ is defined in the MeatEater Glossary:

Bucket-

Bucket \ˈbə-kət\

noun

When you’re fishing a river, you want to keep your eyes open for the buckets. They’re a great spot to get a line wet and have a solid chance at getting a fish on the line. Watch the video to find out more.
