I read an interesting article this morning about the 12 member panel that will be appointed to deal with the deficit issues. So far Harry Reid has appointed members that are partisan and considered left of center. The article stated that the people appointed are not the ones that would likely work/play well with others across th aisle. This apparently signifies that the democrats are essentially creating a stalemate with this commission knowing that nothing will get done. It is likely the Republicans will respond in kind and appoint members that are far to the right of center.

My understanding is that if this group cannot produce legislation to cut the deficit we automatically get across the board spending cuts which would include defense spending. It may be that this is what they wanted all along...an automatic trigger so they don't have to make decisions.

The ironic thing is that there was a commission already formed not long ago which included Alan Simpson. This commission included people from both parties and they came up with a guideline to reduce the deficit. Economists agreed that the guidelines they produced would actually have a significant impact on the deficit and included tough choices that were necessary. The guidelines were never adopted because the choices and truth it reflected were seen as to harsh.
