Wisconsing Fishing Finder Will (Maybe) Put You On The Bite

Huzzah, cheeseheads! Wisconsin’s 2025 general inland fishing season opens on May 3, and this year, the Department of Natural Resources has a new tool that might help you improve your catch. It’s called Fishing Finder.

The Wisconsin DNR’s new Fishing Finder website is built to help you find important information for chasing your piscatorial dreams. Head over to this link, and you can find a “one-stop shop for fishing regulations, launch locations and access points, stocking information and more.” Their words, not ours.

But it does appear to be quite useful, especially for those starting out in the world of fishing, when there are a lot of regulations to keep straight. Take a look below for a screen-cap of the information you might find about Green Lake, for instance, in the heart of the state in Green Lake County:

Finding Fish will also share information on how to access water, including location of public lands and easements, and places where you can fish from shore. While there are probably still ways that you can mess up and accidentally break a fishing law, this site will at least help with the basics of bag limits, seasons and min-max size regulations and so on. In an age where so many restrictions are being passed on outdoors pursuits, and so many are getting into fishing without having the guidance of others who know the laws already, a site like this can be a big benefit.

It’s also very helpful to know stocking information, which is available through Fishing Finder, as chasing fish is much easier if you know where to start instead of bumbling around non-productive waterbodies hoping to find fish through trial and error. Other useful information, like knowing the eating guidelines of wild fish, are sadly becoming important in a time when pollution has impacted many waterways.

The Fishing Finder doesn’t guarantee you any catches, alas—but it might help your odds. Before you head out, Wisconsin DNR has one other important message:

No matter where anglers decide to fish, all Wisconsin residents and nonresidents age 16 or older are required to purchase a fishing license. Annual resident licenses cost $20 each, or purchase a spousal license for $31 so you and your spouse can fish together. All fishing licenses and stamps can be purchased online via Go Wild, at a registered sales location or at DNR Service Centers.

There you have it. Happy fishing!
