Cormorant fishing is a traditional method used for hundreds of years, and has been mastered by fisherman from Japan and China to Greece and France. It involves teaching cormorant birds to fish in rivers and deliver their catches back to an awaiting boat. A non-harmful snare is tied to the base of the bird's throat, preventing it from swallowing big fish (they can still eat smaller ones, so everyone is happy), which are then retrieved by the fishermen.
