LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 3.5 FEET, CLEAR AND 70 DEGREES.

By Ken Sturdivant

Spotted bass fishing is good. The fish are feeding and there are some big fish being caught all over the lake. Drop shot rigs, Mini Me spinner baits McStick jerk baits and finesse worms are all working. Docks and the main lake reef markers and points are perfect to locations to fish all day. Rig the drop shot with a #1 Mustad offset worm hook. It really does not seem to matter what color worm you use after 20 feet deep, but anything in green works. The fish are from 12 to 29 feet deep and the schools are roaming around. There are some fish surprisingly shallow to 15 feet. Use small worms and creepy crawler style jigs on the rocks and hard clay banks in the mouths of any creek. Use at least three baits per location a worm, a creepy crawler and a shad colored #5 Shad Rap. Texas rigged Zoom finesse worms and a 3/16 ounce weight and a number one Mustad hook will be the best way to get lures to the fish in the brush. Green worms in a variety of shades will be the best way to draw these fish to the baits. Use the Zoom green finesse worm and a black Zoom mini lizard with red flakes. Be sure to work the baits very slowly.

Striper fishing continues to be slow. The weather is crazy for this time of year and the lake thermocline remains locked at he 45 feet level. Some fish have moved back over the river channel. These fish are strung out and it is very difficult to get them to bite. Herring on down rods are only lasting a few minutes due to the low dissolved oxygen content at the 45 plus feet level which makes down rod fishing frustrating and expensive. The best bet has been Lead core at 10 colors but getting them to bite is a struggle. We have seen a few fish on the surface but have not been able to get to them in time. The fish are moving and you have to check the lake from 50 to 120 feet bottom from Browns Bridge to the dam. You also have to carry every rod you own and be prepared to use every method from free lines to lead core. We have had reports of some very small stripers on the north end of the lake in Little River and Wahoo Creek. The forecast is for colder weather this week which should break this stalemate and significantly improve fishing. The striper fishing is a little slow but every day is a new day when it comes to striper fishing.
