Lowrance wiring

I've asked this question on other forums but didn't seem to get a response that worked. I've got a 522iGPS on my console. I didn't use the in-line fuse but wired it to the main fuse block. The issue I'm having is when running in chop or cutting across another boat's wake, the unit will shut off. It occasionally shuts off when I start the outboard also. What's my possible fix? Should I just wire it directly to the battery with the in-line fuse?
