Guntersville Lake is located on the Tennessee River mile 349.0 in Marshall County in Alabama, 75.7 miles downstream from Nickajack Dam, 74. 1 miles from Wheeler Dam, 11 miles northwest of Guntersville, Alabama, and 75 air miles of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Guntersville Lake received its name from the town of Guntersville. The town was names by John Gunter, an early Scottish settler and adopted member of the Cherokee tribe, who established Guntersville one year after the American Revolutionary War ended.
Fishing is the most popular sport at Guntersville Lake. Crappie is the number-one sport fish, Bass and Bluegill are also caught in large numbers. Striped Bass are stocked by the Alabama Game and Fish Division.
Guntersville Lake construction began on December 4, 1935 and began filling with water on January 16, 1939 and took more than 4 years to complete, constructed primarily for flood control and the production of hydroelectric power at a cost of about $54.2 million. Its shoreline measures 949 miles and the lake is spread over 67,900 acres at the top of the power pool. The construction required 409,000 cubic yards of earth excavation, 129,000 cubic yards of rock excavation, 836,500 cubic yards of earth fill, 514,000 cubic yards of concrete, and 4,600 tons of reinforcing steel. The construction of Guntersville Lake employed 3,500 with a total man hours of 13,824,356. There were a total of 524 injuries with three of those fatalities. The generators at Guntersville use the rivers flow to generate more than 700 kilowatt hours each year, or enough electricity to meet the needs of 50,000 homes.
