I used to bass fish alot when i was in my late teens and early twenties and then gave up on it for awhile as life got crazy. I got a bass boat recently when I turned 40 and have been fishing at least once a week. I've noticed some big differences in fishing at 40 than when i was 20 and I wanted to list a few. Please feel free to add to the list. I was thinking about this driving home yesterday from the ramp which must be a sign of advancing age.

1. At 40 its always too windy, too hot, too cold, too calm and god forbid it rains. At 20 I seldom noticed the weather or didn't care since nothing was going to make me go home early.

2. At 40 I spend the night before getting everything ready and have to triple check everything the night before and the morning after. At 20 I rolled out of bed in the same clothes I had on the night before, hooked the boat up and assumed I always had the boat keys with me.

3. At 40 I grunt when I climb over the bow or step off the boat on the trailer. At 20 I jumped onto and off the boat like Bo Duke.

4. At 40 I set the alarm the night before and lay out my clothes and it still takes me about an hour to get ready. At 20 I got up when I woke up and grabbed a coke on the way out the door.

5. At 40 the first sign of dark clouds and I'm racing back to the ramp to load the boat. At 20 I would think this was a great sign since the lightning would drive all the old 40 and over folks off the water and I'd have it to myself.

6. At 40 hitting waves and wakes causes some aches. At 20 waves and wakes are to be cherished as great opportunities to catch a little air.

7. At 40 peeing over the side of the boat is a dangerous act of balance and urinary control. At 20 you could pee and still keep fishing since God gave you two hands (one for each rod).

8. At 40 the people on the water look like maniacs racing all over the place. At 20 you can't wait to get older and be able to have enough money to buy a boat and race all over the place.

9. At 40 sunblock is to be applied in vast quantities before you leave the house and reapplied. At 20 you wonder what all the fuss is over sunblock and determine that since the early settlers didn't have it that it is unnecessary since they did just fine without it.

10. When you fish in the heat at 40 you worry about sunstroke and dehydration and bring plenty of water. At 20 you will drink beer when you get home from fishing and beer is mostly water anyway so its all good.
