Strange article in WSJ today. It said this year was the first year in 62 years that the United States actually exported more oil than it imported but we were still the largest net importer of oil. ????

I didn't have time to re-read the article but why would we need to import oil if we exported more than we brought in? I'm sure there is a financial reason (i.e higher prices where we export to) but just seems a bit strange to put it in a tanker and ship it overseas and then have another ship with oil pass it on the high seas bringing oil from another country.

I'm guessing there is some definition to "net" I'm not getting.
